MAKA is a reading app made by Óscar Claro, in Portugal, who is responsible for your data (the “controller” under the GDPR). Contact: contact@makareads.com. In short: your reading stays on your phone unless you create an account; we keep only what the app needs; we never sell data, show ads based on you, or use tracking or analytics tools.
Everything you record (books, reading sessions, notes, passages, drafts) is stored only on your phone. Two things still use the internet:
You sign in with Google (or Apple). We receive only an identifier from them: no e-mail, no name, no password. What we keep:
| What | Why | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|
| A backup of your reading data (books, sessions, notes, settings) | To restore it on a new phone | Only you |
| Your verified reading days and points, and your Makito | To give and keep your Makito, and to stop cheating | Only you (others, if you show your profile) |
| Your profile: the name and picture you choose, your Makito and badges | Shown to other readers only if you turn it on | Other readers |
| What you publish: Journal entries, pictures, comments, hearts, reading updates, who you follow | The Journal and following | Other readers |
| Counts: views of entries and of sponsored posts, once per reader per day | Your stats; reports to sponsors (totals only) | You and sponsors, as totals; never who |
Before an entry, comment, name or picture is published, it is sent to OpenAI’s moderation service, which says whether it breaks the community rules (for example hate or sexual content). OpenAI processes it under its API data terms. We keep only that something was blocked and which rule, never the text or picture.
Some Journal posts are paid for by a sponsor (a publisher or a shop) and are always marked as sponsored. Everyone sees the same ones: nothing about what you read or write is used to choose them, and nothing about you is given to the sponsor. Sponsors only get totals (views and taps).
MAKA’s database is kept by Cloudflare inside the European Union; the server that answers the app runs on Cloudflare’s network, under Cloudflare’s data processing terms. OpenAI and Google act as service providers for the tasks above.
As long as you have an account. When you delete it (in the app, or by e-mail), we delete your backup, profile, everything you published, your comments, hearts, follows and counts, and your Makito goes back to the Atlas. Copies in our database backups disappear within 30 days. Books you added to the shared list stay, without anything linking them to you.
The camera is used only to read a barcode; nothing is recorded or sent. Reminders are local notifications set by the app on your phone.
To provide the app you asked for (the account, backup, Journal and Makito), and our legitimate interest in keeping MAKA safe and fair (moderation, limits against cheating, counts).
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, or object to its use, by writing to contact@makareads.com. You can also complain to the Portuguese data protection authority, CNPD (cnpd.pt).
MAKA is for readers aged 13 and over.
If this policy changes, the date above changes, and important changes are shown in the app.
